An interesting NFL Trifecta has occurred for me during the last two years. The two teams that I have ties to, the St. Louis Rams and the Cleveland Browns, were joined by the Jacksonville Jaguars in having an ownership change.
For those of you that have been loyal visitors to makintheplay.com, you know that I began tracking the Jaguars as soon as news broke that Shad Khan would become the owner. This change in Jacksonville was significant, because Mr. Khan was in line to purchase the Rams. Then, Stan Kroenke activated a clause that allowed him to go from a minority owner to the majority owner of St. Louis. This led me to name the comparisons between Mr. Khan and Mr. Kroenke as The Stache War.
The winner will be determined by the team that wins the most Super Bowls. At this point, Khan has won all of the battles, as you can learn by reading my blogs:
With training camps fully underway, I have gathered a few additional comparisons, and I will be writing about those soon. The Rams and the Jaguars are similar in a lot of ways, and both teams have a long journey to competitiveness, let alone arriving as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
The Stache War received a third participant recently that really shook things up in the conflict. The speculation that began in June and was revealed as truth at the end of July became official in August. Jimmy Haslam II is the new owner of the Browns. For details about Mr. Haslam, read these blogs:
Mr. Haslam doesn’t have a mustache, but he is very much a candidate in this confrontation. The Browns, Jaguars and Rams are at the bottom of the NFL. They each have made improvements for the 2012 season. They each have loyal, committed fans that deserve a winning team. They each have owners that claim to want to win the Super Bowl. Additionally, I am connected to and invested in each of the franchises.
The questions are: Which owner can deliver a Super Bowl first? Which owner can win multiple Super Bowls?
We are a long way from having answers to those questions. However, the steps taken by Khan, Kroenke and Haslam during the next year will reveal which fans should have the most optimism. Stay tuned.
